Hi guys!
I have very recently got back from a month in Central America! It was absolutely amazing, and I already miss it! We did 5 countries within that month, so it was a tight squeeze, and we had to choose some countries to only spend a few days in.
I travelled with 5 of my university friends, and we actually created a blog about our travels which we all contributed to, which I will link at the end!
I will write about each country individually as I think that’s easier that trying to fit everything into one post.
The first country we visited was Mexico! Our flight was from London to cancun, and was a total of 11 hours (luckily there were films on the flight which made it more bearable).
We arrived into cancun at around midday, and as soon as we walked outside, we were hit by the heat! It was about 34 degrees, but the closeness and humidity made it feel about double that. We got a bus to Playa del Carmen where our hostel was. Playa del Carmen is a cool part of Mexico, but quite touristy, which is not what we would choose, but it was a good place to start.
Our hostel was called humble bumble. It has an awesome roof top bar with a pool and hammocks, and was conveniently opposite a big supermarket.
On our first full day in Mexico, we took a collectivo (a small local bus) to a beach called akumal. We didn’t really know what to expect, as we were told to go there by one of our hostel roommates. But we are so glad that we did! It was a beautiful white sand beach with lots of palm trees and beautiful clear water, and although there were loads of people on the beach, it still felt serene and lovely. And at the beach we could rent snorkelling gear, and swim with huge turtles that grazed on Sea grass, which grew not too far from the shore. So we hired this equipment, which was about £10 for two sets, and spent the day here.
It was amazing to snorkel with turtles. I didn’t expect it to be easy to spot them, but even meters from the shore we spotted numerous turtles! They were so graceful and unaffected by the presence of people. We swam around them, and watched as they swam to the surface for air. Whilst on the beach we also saw an octopus, sting rays and lots of other awesome animals!
We got pretty burnt as we didn’t want to wear sun cream into the water, in case it harmed the turtles health, so I was very glad that I brought a huge container of aftersun! But what a great first day!
The next day we wanted to go to tulum, which is a large area of Mayan ruins recently discovered. We took a long collectivo and queued for a long time, but it was worth it! To enter the ruins, we walk through a canopy area, and got to see iguanas and lizards, which was unexpected but awesome!
The site was really great, and there were so many ruins to see. It was easy to imagine the mayans living there, and the information at the site was really interesting. The heat was horrendous though. Even after walking 10 minutes we were dripping with sweat, and there was little to no shade to hide in. But luckily the site has steps down to a beautiful but crowded beach. We found a spot on the beach, and ran straight into the water to cool ourselves down. I remember being in the water and looking up onto the ruins and thinking how lucky I am to be there! We
Once we had cooled, we went back into the ruins and finished looking round. Once finished, and after walking out of the ruins to find food, we went to find supposedly the most beautiful beach in Mexico. Even with high expectations, this did not dissapoint. Playa del paradiso. You can tell by the name that this was paradise. It was a long stretch of bright white sand, palm trees and clear blue water. We expected there to be crowds of people, but we were almost the only ones there! This made it extra special. We spent the rest of the day on the beach, eating freshly cooked pizzas and dipping in and out of the sea as we pleased. We
The last day in Mexico, we wanted to explore playa del Carmen. It was very commercialised, with lots of tourist shops. It felt a lot like a city in England, only 10x hotter. We bought some gifts for family and friends, and went to find the beach. This beach was definitely not as nice. It was very crowded, there was almost no free sand to sit in. Also, for some reason there was loud club music blaring from restaurants, which took away any chill atmosphere from the beach. But it was still nice to be in the water, and it was a good time to write postcards and play soduko.
So that’s our time in Mexico in a nutshell. Next part will be about belize!
If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear them!!
